The picture on the left, appearing in varying places around the site including as an icon, is from an old newspaper (But Club) that my wife & daughter picked up at a market in France. It is cyclist Wim van Est on his way to victory in the 1950 Bordeaux-Paris, Van Est was the first Dutchman to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, but is probably most famous for falling down a ravine while descending the Col d’Aubisque in the 1951 TdF, ending about 60m below the road before climbing back up on a chain of tyres – story here and there’s even a film of it on YouTube. I’m sure he was anything but Grumpy at the time of the picture as he was on his way to winning the race, but he certainly would be justified later!

Memes, etc I’ve found in varying places including CyclingMemes
